I loved Puerto Rico because I saw all the opportunity to study and work here in the academic contexts.

I also fell in love with the people. They are so welcoming and loving, even though they often don’t have much to offer. The best thing is to go “home” to my Puerto Rican family on the weekends, and Mami has just made mofongo con pescado de mero that Papi caught that morning. She hands me a fresh  mango frappe and tells me to leave my laundry at the door and go take a nap or watch tv. This family completely accepted me, and treats me as their daughter and it is so beautiful to witness.

One other thing I love is teaching. I have the amazing opportunity to work with students inteaching them English and it is so rewarding. To watch their skills get better and help them think critically when reading literature and essays is more fun that I could ever imagine.

Puerto Rico is an amazing island. As long as you come here with an open mind and a happy heart, you will be able to find your happiness here. As they say, Puerto Rico lo hace mejor.

Why Puerto Rico? Simply because it’s the best!

I am a law student of KFU-Graz and did an exchange with ISEP at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez. I was originally supposed to stay for only one semester, but I decided to make it a whole year because Puerto Rico became my favorite place on Earth! What’s so great about Puerto Rico? Well, everything! Starting with the people, when I first arrived, I was a little lost but everyone was so friendly and helpful that I felt at home immediately. Then obviously the nature—in the Caribbean, you get amazing sandy beaches where you can relax, surf, snorkel etc., you can hike, there are many caves to explore, waterfalls and the rainforest, and of course you also have the beautiful city of San Juan. And of course, the UPR campus is amazing! Mayagüez is a small town with a big university (about 13,000 students). UPR Mayagüez has a great reputation amongst US universities and offers a variety of courses in many fields. The staff and the professors, like all Puerto Ricans, are always friendly and helpful with anything you need. For me, Puerto Rico was the perfect place to study and I really had the time of my life, as ISEP promises.

Hi,
My name is Rolf and I came as an exchange student in 2011 to the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (UPRM). Now I am a Ph.D. student in the Marine Science Department.

My exchange semester was very positive and motivated me to continue my studies at the UPRM. The first day I arrived in the international office where I was          cordially received.  At school everybody was kind and helped me to adjusted fast to the new environment. During my exchange I studied in the Geology Department. The classes were held at a high level and field trips showed me the geological varieties of the island. A campus verde kayaking trip introduced me to the Marine Science Department. The department offers great possibilities for marine scientists. In the Marine Geology Program I became part of an ongoing study to create sedimentary paleoclimate records. My research results might help to understand how changes in the ocean circulation affect global climate patterns.

Hello,
I’m Verna and I came as an exchange student to the University of Puerto Rico -Mayagüez (UPRM).

I came to UPRM with the intention of spending an amazing semester here in Puerto Rico, improving my Spanish,  enjoying the island, and learning about a new culture. I  never imagined that I would still be here almost two years later! When the end of my first semester at UPR was approaching, I felt that one semester was not nearly enough time to discover all this island has to offer. I decided to extend my stay for another semester. After that semester, I still didn’t feel ready to leave Puerto Rico just yet. During my second  semester here, I discovered a graduate program at UPR which seemed perfect for me, so I decided to apply. Now, I am in my second semester in the program and I’m loving every bit of it: the program, my professors, my classmates, and of course, all of the wonderful friends I’ve met during my time here. There are not enough words to describe how the experience of coming to Puerto Rico has changed my life, but I can say that I now have two different countries which I call home, Canada and Puerto Rico! I recommend that everyone take the chance to spend at least one semester in a new country such as Puerto Rico. You won’t regret it!
