This instrument is very powerful tool for the trace analysis of compounds that have functional groups that exhibit fluorescence. Usually these are organic compounds or inorganic complexes that have an aromatic and rigid portion that are not able to relax by traditional mechanism such as vibration and rotation. This instrument has up to parts per billion sensitivity, when used under optimum conditions. Compounds that do not have fluorescence can be derivatized to introduce a functional group that enables fluorescence.
