What Cancer Can’t Take Away From You
It cannot take away your faith,
Shatter your hope,
or lessen your love.
It cannot destroy true friendship,
invade the soul,
or take away eternal life.
It cannot conquer the spirit.

For Milton, it didn’t take away his desire to sing. With his guitar in hand, he interprets inspiring melodies, which he composed. Ángel hasn’t missed a single day of work. Even though he’s in treatment, it hasn’t weakened his sense of responsibility. For Eneida, it didn’t stop her from continuing with her graduate studies. She obtained her master’s degree in Industrial Management. Juan Diego enjoys the sea, navigating, swimming and a variety of beach activities. This young man of 11, has not lost his desire to smile.
They have experienced what it means to be cancer patients. They attest to the fact that the condition can’t take away their faith, hope, solidarity or the strength to share a message of prevention and education.
Because of this, they will represent cancer patients in the Relay for Life of 2009, which will take place for the third time at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM), this is according to an announcement made recently during the activity’s launching, which took place at Mayagüez Town Center.
Ángel Cintrón is an employee at the UPRM Physics Plant and, along with Eneida Serra, they are both spokespersons for the event. The event’s youth spokesperson is Milton Carrero, who works at the Press Office of the UPR Sea Grant Program, with base at UPRM. Juan Diego Ramírez de Arellano is the child spokesperson, who is currently in seventh grade at the Southwestern Educational Society (SESO).
The activity, coordinated by the Western Unit of the American Cancer Society, will take place at the UPRM’s synthetic track, May 2-3, 2009. They are hoping to raise $350 thousand and register 65 teams, indicated doctor Ana M. Soto, president of the Mayagüez’ Committee.
“Achieving these goals will convert into direct services for the patients of 15 towns that we serve in the West. Relay for Life, along with being our fund-raising activity is also an event meant for spending time with family and co-workers who are united under one cause, saving lives,” commented doctor Soto.
Soto invited entities and families to make up the teams supporting the event, which theme this year is Celebrating Hope. “I urge the community and organizations that still haven’t joined to participate in this celebration of life.”
Equally, doctor Roberto Vargas, executive assistant of UPRM Chancellor, made a call to all students and employees of UPRM to join in and participate in the activity.
“Each step that we take in the relay is a day, an hour of life for one of the many cancer patients. Together we celebrate hope at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez,” emphasized Vargas.
Mildred Carrero, national director of Relay for Life, also invited citizens to participate in a cancer study known as CPS3. “The objective is to understand the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer,” she explained.
Those interested must be between the ages of 30 and 60 who have not been diagnosed with cancer and willing to fill out documents every two years.
For more information about this study, contact 1-866-604-5888 or log onto www.cancer.org/cps3. For more details about Relay for Life and how to form your team call 787-833-3320.
